Size the boiler to the radiation
Steam boilers are matched to the connected radiator load. Copying the old boiler size or using square footage alone can produce an oversized boiler that short-cycles, builds pressure, and sends wet steam into the mains.
Follow the boiler piping instructions
The required risers, header diameter, takeoff arrangement, equalizer, Hartford Loop, and return connections help separate water from steam and return condensate safely. Top Shelf treats the piping diagram as a minimum—not a suggestion.
Clean startup protects performance
New steam piping and boiler sections introduce oils that can make the waterline surge. Skimming, flushing, low-pressure control setup, safety testing, and follow-up observation are part of producing stable steam.
