Steam and hydronic boilers operate very differently. A pressure reading that is normal for one may be completely wrong for the other, so diagnosis begins by identifying the system.

High pressure on steam

Most residential steam systems heat best at very low pressure. A clogged pigtail, misadjusted pressure control, inaccurate gauge, restricted venting, or oversized boiler can allow pressure to rise.

High pressure on hot water

If hydronic pressure climbs toward the relief-valve setting as the boiler heats, the expansion tank may be waterlogged, isolated, undersized, or incorrectly charged. A fill valve can also overfeed the system.

Never cap a relief valve

A relief valve is a critical safety device. Discharge means the pressure or temperature condition—and the valve itself—must be evaluated.
